Design >> Usability Me >>
A sample of my work, for clients local and abroad.   Some interfaces I've re-engineered, with outstanding results.   Tim Jones: digital designer and usability expert. Read my bio.

Interfaces that are compelling, emotionally reactive and above all, usable. Solutions that transcend the cliché of cold, lifeless technology and impresses upon users wonderment, empowerment, and reward.

Order process workflow

Problem
Company branches coordinating print adverts, outdoor, brochures, business cards, etc were wasting money and time on the conventional process of:

  • Outsourcing artwork design
  • Lengthy phone calls
  • Delivery costs
  • Repeated reviewing of print samples
  • Tedious review meetings to get final signoff by all parties
  • Conventional billing processes and associated red tape.

To make matters worse, branches were deviating from company branding guidelines.

Solution
We moved the entire process online. An artwork ordering web application was built using:

  • User profiling and scenarios
  • Workflows
  • Wireframes
  • User testing

The interface has a core “bare bones” wizard interface for beginners to order single print jobs, which are delivered to the Print shop in print-ready .pdf format.

The interface intuitively encourages the client to use richer features:

  • Create, edit artwork
  • Repeat routine tasks (ordering, payments) with a single click
  • Manage multiple vendors automatically

Results

  • The web application and its automation enabled massive cost savings for clients such Volvo, and BP.
  • The system became a brand management repository (brand bible) of images, corporate identity, and print templates.
  • Company branding became uniform and up to date across all branches

Problem
The South African Airways site needed an overhaul. The interface was cluttered, confusing, and hard to use.

  • The interface was crowded
  • The site's branding was obsolete
  • Online booking, My Booking management, Business travel, and Voyager Air miles were split into disparate sub sites with incongruent interfaces
  • Online bookings were at 8% of all bookings made

Solution
Starting with pencil and paper, We re-designed the site from the ground up.

The following steps were taken, and our findings documented in an understandable, informative framework.

  • User Scenarios
  • Card Sorting
  • Information Architecture
  • Paper Prototypes
  • Workflows (eg Booking process)
  • Wireframes
  • User testing

Results
The previous steps resulted in a fresh, simpler, far easier to use interface.

  • We removed all unnecessary gumpf out of the interface
  • The new site's branding was updated
  • Online booking, My Booking management, Business travel, and Voyager Air miles were consolidated into one interface
  • Online bookings went up 300% in the first week of launching the new site
